Can we talk about materials for a second?
Here at PD materials are important. In today’s world of mass production, it seems that quality of materials is taken for granted. We want our products to have a long life and so we must start by selecting the best materials. We find inspiration and comfort in nature, so it only makes sense that our materials are a product of it.
Vegetable Tanned Leather
Vegetable Tanned Leather is a sturdy material that is created through natural and eco-friendly processes. It’s a labor-intensive operation that uses natural tannins from tree bark. This process differs from chrome tanned leather which uses chromium salts mixed with vegetable oil to prepare the leather.
Hardwood
Ash is a very durable hardwood that can survive in many different environmental situations. They are very common in the eastern part of the US. Their ability to adapt and to store carbon make ash wood a sustainable material. Manufacturing ash wood has a relatively low carbon footprint because wood waste is recyclable. This offsets the carbon emissions during the harvesting and processing stages. In addition, ash wood stores carbon through its whole lifespan including when it’s made into furniture.
A. American Walnut is a dark wood that is considered to be a great alternative to exotic woods. Walnut trees capture and store carbon during its life cycle. It also can reproduce naturally in diverse land. Manufacturing walnut has a relatively low carbon footprint because wood waste is recyclable. Like ash wood, walnut wood stores carbon through its who lifespan including when it’s made into furniture.
Satin Wood Oil
Satin Wood Oil is an indoor linseed oil used for coloring raw wood, concrete, cork and other materials. Made with pure ingredients leaving out solvents and other unnecessary chemicals. This means the colors are never 100% the same, but that’s the beauty of natural materials.
Natural Fibers
Natural fibres such as silk, wool, mohair, cotton, linen, and jute come from plants or animals. They are characteristically absorbent, biodegradable, renewable, durable, and natural antibacterial. The fabrics we use, pillow inserts and thread are all composed of natural fibers.
Adhesives and Gums
A. Titebond III wood glue used in the construction of our pieces is a non-toxic, solvent free waterproof wood glue. It is FDA approved for indirect food contact (cutting boards).
B. Intercom Glue, Ecostick 1804 is water based non-toxic glue used for binding leather. It doesn't contain VOCs is safe for humans and the environment
C. Gum tragacanth is a natural gum that comes from the dried sap of plants. It is extracted and made into a liquid used to smooth and burnish the edges of leather.
